After the enormous battle that took place in Karakura Town, Aizen Sōsuke, Ichimaru Gin, Tōsen Kaname, and all the Espada were finally defeated. The Gotei 13 was in distraught, as there were still 3 captains that were missing, and now there was no captain commander. After holding a ceremony for Yamamoto Genryūsai Shigekuni, the king held a meeting with the other captains. After a long discussion, a new captain commander was decided on. The new captain commander was now Kairu Rii, a shinigami that had been on a road to progress very quickly. He had made his way through the seated ranks fairly quick, and was already a candidate for Squad 9 captain, but was moved to captain commander for his high potential.
After arriving back into the human world, Ichigo Kurosaki, Orihime Inoue, Ishida Uryuu, and the others enjoyed a peaceful return to the town that they had saved. After a while, they began to notice something was wrong. Ichigo had become more active in cleansing hollows, and began to notice that there were no other shinigami assisting. With several attempts to contact Soul Society, it was learned that for some unknown reason, the Senkaimon wasn't working. Urahara Kiskue had done several experiments and tests to try and restore it, but nothing prevailed. With out the aid of the shinigami, the human world was now in grave danger.
After the Espada were defeated, it was soon known by the other arrancar, and a few began to stand up. The former primera who was numbered 101, Taski Muramasa took rise as the new primera, ripping off the numbers 01 as an act of pride and began to form a new group of Espada. This new group of Espada being more intelligent, cunning, and deadlier, they formed a plan to take over all 3 worlds. Already claiming Hueco Mundo, they decided to take the human world first. Being the ones who had found a way to disable the Senkaimon, they infiltrated the human world, and caused havoc, taking over as they hunted down the remaining shinigami they could find, and annihilating any other force that tried to oppose them. They eventually conquered the entirety of the human world, and began to rule different lands from Las Noches.
5 years have passed since the battle in Karakura Town. During this time, Soul Society has been disconnected from the human world, and it has been ravaged. Humans are now close to being extinct, as the population of hollows spread, creating what was known as a 'Hollowacolypse'. The Espada have decimated most major points of civilization, and very few remain. In the major battles that took place with the Espada winning the high majority of them, an old group of humans came out from the shadows in order to take the place of the shinigami, who were rare to find still alive on earth, as well as the Quincy. They were known as The Jade Order, a group of elite warrior monks who were spread across Earth, and became what seemed to be humanity's last lines of defense. With a great sacrifice, The Jade Order had managed to save and protect a few of humanity's last major hubs of civilization and had created defensive barriers around a few of them. There are still small towns and villages across the land, but they are few and hard to find.
Despite the little hope humanity has managed to gather of survival, there are attempts being made to save itself. Urahara continuously works on finding a way to open the Senkaimon, as Captain Commander Rii has charged Squad 12 in conducting research into opening the gate only, not on any developments for Soul Society itself. As Taskai continues to ravage the world, his large army of hollows are being met by humans who have begun to sprout spiritual powers due to the amount of spiritual activity. The remaining human government systems have begun to create their own special task forces consisting of those with powers, and are assisted by those who can see the hollows now. Though not all of the remaining human race can see them, the mass majority can now see a lot of the spiritual inhabitants in the human world. Ichigo helps out where he can, still protecting Karakura Town as his main duty. 5 years of desolation. 5 years of chaos. 5 years of horror. The existence of the very universe is in danger. What will you do to it?
